Final Condition Met: Implementation of the First Geothermal Power Plant in Northern Croatia Begins
Varaždin County, the Municipality of Mali Bukovec, and their company Bukotermal are moving forward with the design and permitting process for the construction of the first geothermal power plant in Northern Croatia and the second in the country. Bukotermal has fulfilled the final condition required to launch this largest project in the history of Varaždin County: a contract has been signed with INA for the purchase of the land housing the Lunjkovec-1 well, thus resolving all property and legal matters.
"This land parcel is extremely important because, in electricity production, it will serve as an injection well to return cooled water back into the geothermal reservoir. Resolved property and legal matters now enable the design and permitting process for the construction of the geothermal power plant, heating pipeline, and associated petroleum, electrical, and mechanical facilities. Furthermore, the purchase of this land is crucial for the design and permitting of new pairs of production and injection wells, as two new injection wells are planned on this very site", explained Bukotermal’s director, Alen Požgaj.
This significant investment follows exploration confirming that the Lunjkovec-Kutnjak geothermal field contains geothermal water at a depth of 2,430 meters, with a temperature of 142.03 degrees Celsius, representing excellent potential for electricity production.
In addition to electricity production, the plant will also be able to utilize thermal energy with a capacity of around 90 megawatts.
